Shop Owner vs. Freelancer: The Real Costs of Running a Business
🔌 EB Bills vs. Freedom: The Real Math of
Business Life
This post isn't meant to criticize anyone. There is no
competition here, and certainly no room for jealousy. Today, I want to talk
about the "Real Math" of business life that we all feel but rarely
discuss out loud.
⭐ 1. A Small Story: The Shutter
and the Stress
Yesterday morning, I heard that a shop owner in my
neighborhood was closing down. When I went to see him, he was sitting quietly
by his half-open shutter. When I asked him why, he gave a smile that reached
his eyes but carried a lot of pain.
"Priya
Ma," he said, "By
the time I pay the EB bill, shop rent, staff salaries, GST, and the internet
bill... where is the profit? I am working just to pay the bills."
His words stayed with me. But later that day, a
freelance friend messaged me. She said, "Akka, I love the freelance life. No rent, no EB
burden, and I have total freedom. I am happy."
Both are telling the truth. Neither is wrong. They are
just living two different realities of the same industry.
⭐ 2. The Shop Owner’s Life:
Visible and Invisible Costs
Running a physical studio or salon comes with a long
list of visible expenses:
· 💸 Rent & EB Bills
· 👩💼 Staff Salaries & Bonuses
· 🧾GST, Licenses, and Local Taxes
But there are invisible costs too. The 365-day mental tension. The fear of "What will society think if I close for a day?" The lack of a true "day off" because the business is always on your mind. Society gives a shop owner a lot of respect, but they don't see the pressure of maintaining a "trendy" brand in a competitive market in today’s fast-paced world." (Ithu global readers-kkum suit aagum). We pay for that respect with our peace of mind.
⭐3. The Freelancer’s Life:
Freedom with a Different Tension
On the surface, the freelance life looks like a dream:
· ✅ No fixed rent or heavy
electricity bills.
· ✅ Control over your own timing.
· ✅ The ability to work from anywhere.
But the invisible
tension here is different. “When
will the next booking come?” There is no team—you are the marketing
manager, the accountant, and the artist all in one. Often, society dismisses
freelancers by saying, "Oh,
they are just doing a part-time job at home," not realizing the 24/7
hustle required to stay visible.
⭐ 4. The "Respect
Math"
Our society has a specific pattern for respect. If you
have a big sign-board and a shop, respect comes automatically. If you are a
freelancer, you are often seen as someone "passing the time."
The truth? Both are incredibly hard. The shop owner
pays for respect with high overhead costs. The freelancer pays for freedom with
income instability. We are all paying a "bill" of some kind.
The Mentor's View on 'Overhead': "In business terms, we call these EB and rent bills 'Fixed Overheads.' Whether you have 100 clients or 0 clients, these bills never stop. As a Mentor, I always advise beginners to start as a freelancer to master the skill first, and then move to a studio once they have a 'Buffer Fund' for at least 6 months of overheads."
⭐ 5. So, Which is Better?
Neither is "better"—it depends on your
personality and your goals:
·
A Shop/Studio is better if: You want to build a
long-term brand, you have a steady budget, and you can handle the pressure of
managing a system and a team.
·
Freelancing is better if: You value time freedom above
all else, you are a self-driven "one-person army," and you can handle
the ups and downs of a flexible income.
⭐ 6. A Question for You
In my 26 years as a Beauty Mentor, I have seen both sides. I have felt
the weight of the bills and the joy of the freedom. Now, I want to ask you
honestly:
Where are
you in your journey? Are you a Shop Owner or a Freelancer? What is your biggest
challenge right now?
Let’s talk in the comments. By sharing our realities, we understand each other’s lives a little better. 💛
Your Next Step: Whether you run a shop or work as a freelancer, managing your professional image is key.
With love and respect for your hustle,
