How to Identify Your Skin Type The Simple 5-Minute Tissue Paper Test
🧻 The 5-Minute Tissue Paper Test: Finding Your True Skin Type
By Priya | Your Beauty Mentor
"In my 26 years of professional experience, I have seen thousands of women buying the wrong products because they misunderstand their skin. In our intense tropical humidity, many think they have 'Oily' skin, but they are actually just experiencing excessive sweating and surface dehydration. When you treat sweat as oil by using harsh, stripping products, you damage your skin barrier and cause even more sensitivity. Realizing the difference between heat-induced sweat and true sebum is the first step toward a healthy glow."
Before you spend another rupee on a
cream, try this simple test at home. It’s more accurate than any
"viral" quiz.
Step 1: The Clean Slate
Wash your face with a very mild,
gentle cleanser. Pat it dry softly. Now, here is the hard part: Do not
apply any moisturizer, serum, or oil. Leave your skin completely bare for one
hour.
Step 2: The Test
After one hour, take a clean,
single-ply tissue paper (or a blotting paper). Press it firmly against
different areas of your face for a few seconds each:
- Your forehead
- Your nose
- Your chin (The T-Zone)
- Your cheeks
Step 3: Read the Results
Hold the tissue up to the light.
What do you see?
- 🌟 Oily Skin:
If the tissue shows greasy spots from the forehead, nose, AND cheeks, you
have oily skin.
- 🌓 Combination Skin:
If the tissue is oily only on the T-Zone (forehead, nose, chin) but your
cheeks feel tight or dry, you have combination skin.
- 🍂 Dry Skin:
If there is no oil on the tissue at all, and your face feels tight or
looks flaky, you have dry skin.
- ✅ Normal Skin:
If there is very little oil and your skin feels comfortable (not tight,
not greasy), you have normal skin.
💡 Why Your Skin Type Matters for Your Budget
As someone with an MBA in Finance,
I always tell my clients that knowing your skin type is the best way to save
money. If you have dry skin but use a "Deep Cleansing" charcoal wash,
you are just damaging your skin barrier and will end up spending more on repair
creams!

Akka’s Local Tip:
"In our tropical heat and humidity, many people mistake dehydration for oiliness. If your skin feels oily on the surface but 'tight' or 'stretchy' underneath, it is actually dehydrated (lacking water, not oil). When you use harsh soaps to strip the oil, your skin panics and produces even more oil to protect itself. The secret is to use water-based hydration to balance the skin without clogging pores."
🌸 Final Thought
Your skin type can change with age,
season, and even the water in your town. Do this test once every six months to
keep your routine updated and effective.
